We exist to help members achieve their best financial retirement outcome

Social movements, organisations and Rest Super

At Rest, we believe that supporting social organisations who by their very nature are agents of change is one of the most effective strategies we can take towards improving the retirement outcomes for our Indigenous members, while also helping to create a better, fairer, more sustainable Australia.

In 2019, our support for First Nations Foundation began when we became a co-sponsor of their Indigenous outreach program, the Big Super Day Out.

Big Super Day Out

We have many members living in remote communities who work at local retailers where the default super fund is Rest. And our team had the pleasure of getting to meet some of them when went to Darwin, Kununurra, Broome, Galinwin’ku, Ramingining, Milingimbi and Gapuwijak as part of the Big Super Day Out. By the end of their 7-day tour, they’d provided more than 500 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with information and guidance about their super, and helped them reconnect with $9.545 million worth of super  that belonged to them..

It was an honour to be providing help via a social organisation that enjoys such deep trust among the community, while gaining authentic insights and profound understandings of the financial challenges that people who live in remote communities face. Needless to say, we signed on again for this year’s Big Super Day Out and intend to renew that support of First Nations Foundation on an ongoing basis.

Making an impact in 2020 and beyond

We’re currently in the process of evolving our plan of social action initiatives. Our aim is to raise the standards of accessibility, suitability and affordability of financial services, particularly for those Rest members who are financially vulnerable and are either excluded, or at risk of being excluded, from the mainstream financial system and economy.

We commit to being key participants in improving the financial resilience and wellbeing of Rest members of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent – individuals, businesses and communities.

What We’re Doing to Maximise Retirement Outcomes for Indigenous Members

  • Rest is committed to driving better retirement outcomes for indigenous members through the development of practices and processes that are culturally specific.
  • We recognise there is scope to develop educational materials tailored to Indigenous members, improve the financial literacy of these Australians and give our staff the right tools and resources to support them. For example, by actively partnering with social organisations like First Nations Foundation and community projects such as the Big Super Day Out, culturally-specific materials will help our Indigenous members connect more easily with their superannuation and related insurance products.
  • We have subscribed to the Voluntary Code of Practice and are currently developing policies and processes to specifically address the particular needs of these members, including the adoption of AUSTRAC’s identification guidelines for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

About Rest Super

The Retail Employees Superannuation Trust (Rest) was established in 1988. Open to all workers throughout Australia, we’re one of the largest funds by membership, with around 1.7 million members and more than $54 billion of funds under management (June 2020).

Profit to members

We’re an award-winning, not-for-profit industry superannuation fund. For the last 30 years, we’ve put our members first. Being membership based, we don’t have any shareholders, which means all our profits go back to our members. Our fees are among the lowest of any superannuation fund.

Serving the people serving Australia every day

As one of the largest funds in Australia, it’s no surprise that our membership is very diverse. We represent people from all corners of the country – in capital cities, regional centres and small towns.

We represent teenagers working their first jobs, to retirees in their 90s. From those who’ve worked part-time or casually, to members who’ve taken us with them throughout their entire working lives.

We represent members working for over 130,000 contributing employers – members who work on shop floors, in distribution centres, warehouses and in head offices – making sure they get the most out of their super and enjoy their personal best retirement outcome.

Indigenous Superannuation

Over and above the support we provide to the First Nations Foundation and its important aims and endeavours, Rest is committed to identifying and pursuing real action to enable financial inclusion, resilience and wellbeing among our Indigenous members, and better connecting those members with their superannuation – for the benefit of all Australians
