First Nations Foundation (FNF), Australia’s only national Indigenous financial literacy organisation, is entering an exciting new chapter, announcing the appointment of Leah Bennett as its new Managing Director.

A proud Wiradjuri woman with over 14 years’ experience across superannuation, financial services, and governance, Leah steps into the role following the departure of outgoing CEO Phil Usher.

The Foundation thanks Phil for his many years of service and dedication, particularly his work supporting the financial wellbeing and economic participation of First Nations people.

“Phil’s contribution to the economic and financial wellbeing of our communities has been immense,” said FNF Chair Ian Hamm. “Over his tenure, FNF has grown to be a significant leader in its field, and he leaves a strong legacy to be built upon.”

Leah brings deep expertise and an unwavering passion for transforming systems to better serve Indigenous communities. A long-standing Board Director of FNF, she has played a critical role in the Foundation’s evolution and impact – from developing culturally responsive training programs to shaping legislative and industry conversations that centre Indigenous voices in finance.

Leah is one of a few Aboriginal women to work in superannuation, and her journey reflects the very impact FNF seeks to create: building pathways, elevating lived experience, and cultivating leadership that drives long-term intergenerational change.

Reflecting on her new role, Leah said it’s an incredible honour to step into the role of Managing Director at First Nations Foundation — an organisation she’s been proud to help shape for the last four and a half years.

“This moment is not just a personal milestone, but a powerful reflection of the future we’re building together: one where First Nations voices are leading conversations in finance, driving systemic change and creating long-term impact for our communities. I look forward to continuing this important work alongside our passionate team and partners,” Leah shared.

Fuelled by her commitment to accurate representation, equity, and Indigenous-led leadership, Leah is driven to see a financial services sector that is culturally safe, inclusive, and equipped to uplift the next generation of First Nations leaders.

“The commencement of Leah in leading FNF is exciting. Her experience in the sector, together with her enthusiasm and energy, will see FNF deliver even better and higher outcomes for our people. I look forward to working with Leah and the positive change she will bring to our sector,” said Ian.

First Nations Foundation is now poised to deepen its reach, influence and impact – empowering communities through education, representation, and self-determined financial wellbeing.

Leah is available for media interviews and commentary on issues including financial education for Indigenous Australians, intergenerational wealth, economic independence, and the future of First Nations leadership.
